When the Saints Go Marchin' inについて(コラム15)

平日は23時を過ぎて帰宅の途につく日常なので
余計に気づくのですが、今夜は涼しいというより
少し寒いですね。浜松町ではただいまの気温19℃
と表示されてます。まるで季節が一つ進んだようです。

さて、ここ数日私がレコーディングで頭を悩ませていた曲を
今日はご紹介します。

そう、有名な「聖者の行進（When the Saints Go Marchin' in）」です。

「カンタンだよ、そんな曲、誰でも知ってるよ。」と言われそうなのですが、
この曲、実はなかなか奥深いのです。

アメリカ南部で、お葬式の時にこの曲が歌われることは、ご存知の方も多いと思います。

ところが、この曲の歌詞の２番以降は、世の中でいろいろ違うバージョンが存在することをご存じでしたか？

USAでもっともポピュラーだと言われているのが、下記の歌詞です。
（ニューオリンズのお葬式で歌われたり、お祭りで歌われるverです）

ところが、ルイ・アームストロングが1930年代にレコーディングして
一躍この曲を有名にした版の歌詞は、以下のとおりです。

２番以降、全然違いますよね(一部共通のもありますが）。
ルイアームストロングの方は、たぶん本人が若干手を加えたのかも
しれませんが、メッセージ性が強いですね。
きっと戦争や恐慌の時期が背景だった影響も多少あるのでは、
と察します。

もう一つご紹介します。
こちらも有名な歌詞の一つです。

先にご紹介した２つとは、全く内容が違いますが、
この歌詞も案外よく見かけます。
「L.Aやサンフランシスコではこの歌詞だったよ」という情報も、
以前住んでいた方から教えていただきました。

たしかにGoldとかCrownとか、バブリーな単語は、アメリカ西部が
似合いますね。

こうしていろいろな歌詞を見てきてわかることは、「共通なのは
１番だけ」ということです。

しかし、不思議な状況です。

でも、それだけ世の中にこのメロディーが広まっている証拠でも
あります。子供から大人までよく知っているメロディーですからね。
